According to the Russian customs far east news center (DVOT), officers from the customs operations department recently seized more than 300 kilograms of sea cucumbers worth 10 million rubles (about 1 million RMB) from citizens of the Russian federation during raids.

rubles (about 1 million RMB) from citizens of the Russian federation during raids.

The smugglers allegedly loaded 112 bags of dried sea cucumber into the trunk of a car to be smuggled to China, which was promptly discovered and seized by customs.

The Russian federation lists sea cucumber and other aquatic products as strategically important resources. According to article 226.1 of the criminal code of the Russian federation, "large-scale smuggling of strategically important resources", the smuggler faces 3 to 7 years' imprisonment and a possible fine of up to one million rubles.

Due to the high temperature disaster in the summer of 2018, the production of captive sea cucumbers in China was cut down on a large scale, and the price also rose sharply. The price of finished sea cucumbers in different categories in the Chinese market increased by 20% to 30%. And the price of live sea cucumber of autumn bottom sow is 300 yuan per kilogram, all breaking the historical record.

The huge profits and market demand have given rise to the smuggling chain. The most important channels are the three border channels of China and Russia, China and north Korea, and China and Vietnam. In January 2019, 2 Chinese citizens were found guilty of smuggling sea cucumbers by a court in Russia's Primorsky region. They were both sentenced to 2 years and 10 months in prison and sent to ordinary reformatory. The two Chinese nationals were caught trying to hide after they were spotted trying to smuggle sea cucumbers from Russia through Hassan's checkpoint.
